For over two millennia, tens of thousands of pilgrims experienced marvelous epiphanies at a small town outside Athens, having the fear of death erased and certainty of the continuity of spiritual life imbued in them.

With the rise Christianity this ritual was extinguished forever. The mystery of Mysteries remains to this day. Comparable revelation is now private and confined to the broken individual in the ER, at the wreck scene, or upon the operating table. And our arbiters of reality don't believe these lone pilgrims when they tell their stories of passage and return...Nor do we tolerate any "mass conversion" unless it's in under the roof of the megachurch, or on the couch before the TV or the cinema throne. Do we need something comparable to the genius of the Greeks and Egyptians to see what we are doing to our Mother?

Want to live for centuries? Suffer no pain whatsoever on the downslope to the grave? Become a mind of superposed light particles in an electrochemical soup? These things are in the planning stages right now and progress towards their reality is being made.

But what if persons known and unknown had figured out the "problem of embodiment" thousands of years ago and the knowledge had been secretly passed down but was only available to those willing to work and work hard for it--and no metal/plastic/metamaterial toy played a part in this magic?
